The first edition of this Pulitzer Prize winner was published by Harper & Row in 1968. It was 212 pages long, and the original retail price was $4.95. The first edition identification points are as follows: "FIRST EDITION" is stated on copyright page with no references to subsequent printings. Boards are light gray with silver lettering on a red cloth spine, and red top stain. First issue dust jacket lacks reviews on the back panel. Later issue jacket has two reviews on the back panel - by Publishers' Weekly and John Ridland.

Publisher's have been known to change this without changing the information on the book. So it is possible that the publisher's date was January even though the code on the copyright page says April. Harper and Row typically only stated FIRST EDITION on the first printing. So I highly doubt that there is a FIRST EDITION book with A-S.
Oddly enough, the first dust jacket has 0668 on the bottom corner of the front flap, and that code means June 1968. It is very common for that code to stay the same on the first printing and also later printing books. Publisher's all have their own rules, and they don't always follow their own rules.

Here, Random House says their publishing date is January 2010, and yet all indications on the book are December 2009.
I suspect that in the case that House Made of Dawn, the publisher changed the publishing date while they were printing the book. The date could have started out as June, when they created the dust jacket. Then it was changed to April. So perhaps they pushed it up to January. It's certainly possible.
